Los Angeles Police Officer Jade Donovan is being hunted. There’s the lieutenant who’s out to get her, the psycho who’s stalking her and leaving dead roses at her door, but most frightening of all, she’s been assigned to partner with her son’s father, Mac Stryker. Mac doesn’t know he’s Donnie’s dad, and Jade will stop at nothing to prevent him from finding out and possibly taking away her son. She will protect and defend him at all costs.

Mac Stryker is a cop with something to prove. Five years ago, he’d been forced to resign the police department in disgrace when he was too drunk to take action during a shooting. Now, Mac is sober, back on the force and back working with Jade Donovan, the rookie who’d saved his life. Worse, he finds himself attracted to Jade and her precocious son, Donnie. But Mac is through with love. The violent death of his wife and daughter turned him into an alcoholic, and he won’t put his job or his heart at risk again. He will protect and defend them both at all costs.

But when the deadline looms on Jade’s dozen deadly roses stalker, will the two partners manage to put aside their differences in order to save their son?

Kathy Bennett, a retired twenty-nine year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, has penned a gritty and authentic story of crime and romantic suspense in her novel, A Dozen Deadly Roses. In addition to working on her next novel, she writes a weekly blog that can be found on her website, and writes a monthly column for the North Valley Community News, in Northridge, California.

A Dozen Deadly Roses edition by Kathy Bennett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Around the early part of 2014, I happened to find and read, A Deadly Justice, by Kathy Bennett. This book really grabbed me and I immediately marked Kathy Bennett as a must read author. While this was a fictional story, this book was absolutely accurate with actions, attitudes, sacrifices, police procedures, and personalities.
I went to a book signing and met Kathy Bennett. She let me pick her mind. Kathy Bennett is a retired police officer from LAPD. Her stories are by a season cop putting a composite on real situations in a fictional story.
Kathy Bennett let me know that A Dozen Deadly Roses might have too much romance in this story for me. I too am a retired police officer and was looking for a police procedural novel. I put off reading this book for a number of years and subsequently decided to give it a try.
I found the plot was exciting. The characters held my interest and I enjoyed the novel.
The bottom line is Kathy Bennett writes unparalleled authenticity that can only come from someone that worn a badge. I recommend going to Kathy Bennett's website, check out her books. I highly recommend reading this book, along with all of her exciting novels.

A Dozen Deadly Roses edition by Kathy Bennett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I have always enjoyed reading cop stories, but this one was so well written that I was hooked from the first chapter all the way to the end. It's not often I find a book that I just can't put down for anything.
The story of Jade & Mac is very touching and so believable. I believe I have found a new favorite author in reading this book. There is enough crime factor to make it interesting along with a touch of romance that warms you're heart.
I can't wait to read the other books this author has written. I'm sure if you give it a try, you'll enjoy her writing as much as I have.
4 1/2 STARS for A Dozen Deadly Roses. It kept my interest from the very beginning to the very end. Kudos to Ms. Bennett for choosing a title that caught my eye instantly and for having the talent to write a very interesting page turning story from the very beginning to the very end. Her character descriptions were vivid for Jade, your young son Donnie and Max who has gone through some tragic times and you are now his supervisor . I love not knowing who the perpetrator is until the very end . I am glad that you felt that the romance part didn't have to be over the top sex. Imagination works wonders on it's own.

I always read the biography of a new author and was thrilled to find out that in your real world you are a 21 year police veteran from the LA Police Dept. and now you have implemented your knowledge in writing what you know about. I instantly bought your novel. You have a new fan Kathy and I look forward to reading your next novel.

I recommend A Dozen Deadly Roses for all mystery/thriller readers.
This is more a romantic suspense novel than a true mystery.

There were some inconsistencies (Jade’s son five years old most places, four years old in others) and redundancies (a sofa described with the same words in two adjacent sentences) and a few places where the text seemed a little awkward (long descriptions of a handgun where calling it a Glock or pistol would have been as effective).

The climax, too, could have been a little more drawn out, providing a little more tension, and it came a little too early in the book.

Bennett writes from an omniscient POV, drifting back and forth between the internal thoughts of whichever characters are having a conversation.

I also wondered why didn’t Jade keep track of Mac over the years, especially after Donnie was born, and why she automatically assumed that he would try to take Donnie away from her or demand shared custody if she told him he was Mac’s son?

Still, these are minor points that didn’t detract from my enjoying this novel and I’ll read more of Kathy Bennett’s work if they come my way.
They say you should write what you know (and love). Kathy Bennett's premiere novel, A Dozen Deadly Roses, veritably oozes with love. Not the syrupy sort that romance novels have been (mostly erroneously) linked to for so many years, but the kind that moves mountains, uplifts hearts and makes the world go round. All this in the everyday lives of extraordinary people.

When Officer Jade Donovon finds herself in the midst of a frightening stalker real life nightmare she makes some very human if flawed decisions. Wouldn't even the most dedicated cop break all the rules to keep her son safe? So Jade decides not to inform many people of what she should--including the father of her son, officer Mac Stryker, that they made beautiful precocious Donnie one night while Stryker was in a drunken stupor.

Just when many novels might have lightened up and made more standard turns, Ms Bennett throws in some thrilling twists. Of course we are rooting for this unlikely family to unite, but first there's a sociopath after Jade and her son to be caught. Will Mac learn from his past dealing with grief to choose life and love no matter the cost?

Through simply great story telling, weaving the visceral with internal strife, we are led from the streets of Los Angeles to Las Vegas in a tale that laces love, wonderful secondary characters and heart pounding action. A perfect blend of relationship and chilling suspense. Well done!
